#FastFiction - Jan 2... Dandelion seeds on the breeze

FADE UP

Creek under a bridge- David (13) is doing his homework and Meredith (15) is a ways from him looking at things… kicking Dandelions. Sunny- warm.

Meredith
It’s marvellous- isn’t it?

David
Hmm

Meredith
It is, I really think it is- and the way it feels I love it.

David
Hmm

Meredith
Doncha think?

David
Yeah

Meredith
What?

David
Hmm

Meredith
You’re not even listening- cmon.

David
I’m doing my homework- lemme alone will ya?

Meredith
Cmon talk to me- you never talk to me?

David
I never invite you- go away- okay?

<silence>

Meredith
Whatcha doin?

David
Homework

Meredith
No wha…

David
<interrupting> English.

Meredith
Wasn’t that due yesterday?

David
Ahuh- so…

<silence>

Meredith
You’ll never get good grades if you keep this up- okay?

David
Mmhmm

Meredith
I’ll be quite surprised, really, if Mrs. Ravlic even accepts it tomorrow…

David
Well…

Meredith
She can be very strict you know. Barry Jenkins got an extra mark off his math test for getting mayonnaise on his paper and I know that…

David
What?   Geez- it’s your fault you know – you keep coming here and talking to me- you keep coming here while I’m working and you want to talk and you waste my time.

Meredith
I… just want to visit… you know?

David
Well go visit somewhere else- okay? I’ve got this stuff to do and I’ve got more other stuff to do and maybe if you stop talking and go away…

Meredith
Why don’t you like me?

David
…I might get it done and maybe I won’t get in trouble from Mrs…. Hmm?

<pregnant silence>

David
You know- I’m not Joe, right? Why are you here?

Meredith
<blink>

David
Whatever.

<silence>

Meredith
He sent me a postcard- your brother- used to send me one every day…

David
<back at work> Really?

Meredith
Now it’s like every week…

David
Well- wadda ya expect-

Meredith
… or so.

David continues his work a bit, then looks back at Meredith who is staring at a ladybug on a blade of grass, then back to his homework.

Meredith
Have you ever kissed someone?

David
Go away?

Meredith
You know… kissed. Sometimes I miss that more than I miss your brother.

David
Shutup will ya? Jeez.

Meredith
Sometimes I feel like I’m gonna explode- like a little star in a big sky.

David
You’re weird.

Meredith
I get all warm and my face gets clowny and silly and my hands get sweaty and I look all around for something to you know… Do boys get that way?

David
<clearly lying> No

Meredith
Yeah sure- do you think Joe is thinking that right now? About me? About kissing?

David
Why doncha go home and ask him?

Meredith
I can’t I don’t have his number in Toronto- he never gave it to me.

David
Funny, eh?

Meredith
Do you think about it?

David
Kissing my brother? No

Meredith
<sits up> Kissing

David doesn’t answer, but he is definitely not doing his homework.

Meredith
You know- not like with your Grandma. The real stuff.

Meredith stands up, she is locked on David.

David
I don’t wanna hear none a this.

David, seeing this, stands up and begins to pack his papers and text books. Meredith is getting closer.

Meredith
Just once.

David
Isn’t that like cheating or something- just go home and do whatever.

Meredith
When your body gets all tingly and silly and you just need to be next to someone and you need to hold them and…

David
I’m outta here, okay.

Meredith attacks- books fly every where. Papers like doves

Meredith
Just…

Her arms around his neck

David
Stop

Meredith
One

He pushes back. She is wiry, taller than him. She inches her mouth closer to his.

David
Stop it!

Meredith
It won’t hurt a bit.

He turns his head, and she meets his direction.

David
Get offa me

Meredith
A little one-

She kisses him. He wriggles a bit, then he doesn’t wriggle at all. They speak between each kiss.

David
<Sotto> No

Meredith
Mouth

David
Mmph

Meredith
To

David gasping.

Meredith
Mouth

Do they kiss for moments? Do they kiss for hours, days even. Then…

David
<out of breath> What are you stupid or something?

Meredith collapses on her back. Elated.

David
You’re my brother’s girl friend- alright… stop it just stop it-

Meredith
Did you like it?

David
I’m going home.

Meredith
See you tomorrow, Joe

David
That’s not funny.

Meredith
I miss him. I miss him so much.

David takes a long look at Meredith, his book bag slips off his shoulder as he hunches over.

David
So do I.

They both let that hang in the air with the dandelion seeds. He turns away and leaves.

Meredith sits up and calls to David

Meredith
See you tomorrow, then?

David stops, looks at his feet.

David
Yeah.

Meredith lays back down, David wanders off.

Meredith
It sure is a nice day.
